Becoming a Woman of the Word

womanoftheword.jpg   How many of us struggle in our lives to take enough time to read God’s Word? I find myself so often finding other things to read! There’s blogs and Instagram and Facebook and devotional books and health articles and storybooks! And then there’s the five hundred things that we should be doing – laundry, making food, reading to our children, kitchen stuff… So Bible reading gets put on the back burner once again. Is this God’s pattern for us? How do we overcome this cycle?

I think we need to realize how important reading God’s Word is! As a Christian, it’s my survival, my daily food! 1 Peter 2:2-3 says “Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.” I remember when my sweet baby was newborn… she wanted food All The Time!! I was barely able to get any rest because she wanted to eat every 2 hours or less! If I compare that to my hunger of God’s Word… Wow, I really need to grow in that!!

Self-discipline is something that is easy to talk about and hard to put to practice. But if we are truly wanting the ‘fruit of the Spirit’ to come out of our lives, we will be disciplined.  I often find that when I don’t discipline myself to get up before my baby, Bible reading doesn’t happen. When I don’t discipline myself with the time I spend on social media, Bible reading definitely doesn’t happen. It takes conscious effort to not waste time, whether it be on Instagram or sleeping in or reading other books.

I’m not saying there’s never time for that. What I am saying is I find myself definitely leaning toward spending too much time doing those things. Jesus said when He was on earth, “Whoever wants to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me.”

I want to compare a relationship with God to a marriage. In our marriage, the more time we spend together, the more we get to know each other. The more we get to know each other, the more fun we have together. The more fun we have, the more we want to spend time together. And it just gets sweeter! But spending time with my man doesn’t just happen… We need to plan to spend time together!

Isn’t that how it is with the Lord? If we spend quality time with Him, the more we will crave it! And the more we crave it, the more we’ll do it! And it definitely gets sweeter and richer! But it sure doesn’t happen without a plan! I find that a reading plan helps me so much in my walk with God!

A few years back, I started reading 10 chapters a day, all from different parts of the Bible.   I used Professor Grant Horner’s reading plan. here’s the link to check it out for yourself: http://grant-horner-bible-reading-plan-pdf.weebly.com It was such an amazing time in my life! There was such a deep connection and closeness with the Lord that was so blessed!! As time passed and life happened, I was planning our wedding, and the 10 chapters a day fell by the wayside. I recently found the reading plan again, and I’m so excited to be using it! I find it gives a great perspective on the whole Bible!

I know there’s so much more to be said on this topic and I’m going to write another post about it! But I just want to encourage you to get out your Bible, and start reading! God has so much for you in there!!
